Bed Wetting Medication

In some cases a doctor may prescribe medication to treat bed wetting. Normally when a child stops using the medication, the bed wetting starts again. Thus, it is not a permanent solution. Usually the use of medication should only be considered after all other methods to stop bed wetting have been exhausted.

1.Desmopressin Acetate (DDAVP)

This drug boosts the production of ADH – the hormone that controls urine production. The aim is to help a child produce less urine at night. It is available in pill or nasal spray form. The use of the nasal spray is not recommended for children as the drug stays in the body for longer, leading to serious side-effects. Possible side-effects of DDAVP are the following: seizures ( if a child takes too many fluids with it), headaches, nausea and vomiting.

1102.Anticholinergic drugs such as Ditropan and Levsin

3.Antidepressant such as Tofranil or Imipraminetofranil

The aim with this medication is to influence a child’s sleep and wake patterns, causing him to wake up when his bladder is full. It also have a influence on urine production. A overdose of this drug can be fatal. Other side-effects are sleep problems, mood changes and irregular heartbeat.
