Bed wetting solutions:Lifestyle Tips

Sometimes bed wetting can be caused by what a child eats or drinks. I have learned from personal experience that there are some foods that can trigger a bladder to become overactive. In my case a few bites of strawberry yogurt will have me urgently running to the toilet every 5 minutes. Foods that are known to cause a overactive bladder are tomato basedchocolatemilkfoods, fruit, fruit juice (mostly citrus), spicy and acidic food, sugar, honey, artificial sweeteners, carbonated drinks (soft drinks), milk and milk products. These foods contain irritants that collect in the bladder and can cause it to become over active by going into spasm.

Caffeine ( found in tea, coffee and chocolate) have 3 components that stimulates urine production. Having chocolate milk just before going to bed could contribute to bed wetting. fruitsSome fruit also have a diuretic effect one the bladder, causing a child to urinate more than normal. These fruits are cranberries,  berries, strawberries, pineapples, mangoes, grapes, kiwi, figs, papaya and watermelon.

Sleep deprivation, when a child doesn’t get enough sleep, can cause a child to become overtired. Thus, a child becomes a deep sleeper who doesn’t wake up when his bladder is full. For more information on how much sleep every age group needs, click on the following tab.

Limit fluid intake after 5 pm. If a child participate in sport till late in the evening this may not be wise, though.

Bladder training may work for some children. During the day a child should be encouraged to hold urine in for a while before going to the toilet. Some are of the opinion that a child should go lie down on a bed, with his full bladder, before going to the loo. This will familiarize him with the sensation of having a full bladder.

Double voiding is a routine where a child goes to the toilet when his bed time routine starts and again before going to sleep.

flashlightMake it easy for a child to get to the toilet at night. Dark passages, stairs and bathrooms can be very intimidating to a little one. Ensure that there is sufficient light and easy access to a toilet. Giving a child a flashlight to carry with him to the toilet may also make less anxious to go by himself.

Constipation can also cause bed wetting as a full colon puts pressure on a bladder. It will be wise to consult a doctor if constipation becomes a chronic issue.
