Bed Wetting: When to seek medical help

If bed wetting continues after the age of 7 of 8 it is wise to seek medical advice. Whether medical intervention is necessary will also depend on the impact it has on a child’s self-esteem and psychological development. A child’s self-image can suffer tremendously in the following instances.

  • If a child’s social activities such as camping or sleeping-out become limited.
  • If there is social ostracism by peers.
  • Anger, punishment or rejection by parents.
  • If the bed wetting has been going on for a long time.
  • If there has been many failed treatment attempts.

A child can develop a very negative self-image  because of night-time incontinence, but this normally becomes something of the past when the bed wetting stops. If a child has been dry for at least 6 months and then starts bed wetting it is essential to take him for a medical check-up. In this case there could be medical causes that needs to be addressed.
