Confidence and Honesty

One of the biggest motivators for chronic liars are their lack of self-esteem. There are various reasons why a child may have low esteem.

Personally I believe that unrealistic expectations can cause a child to feel as if he is only accepted on the grounds of his performance. Many parents have high hopes for a child academically, sport-wise or on a cultural level. A child’s self-esteem becomes so closely associated with his performance and any failure there forces him to start creating a alter-ego..a different, perfect version of himself. Thus, he starts to create all sorts of white lies.

The flip-side of the coin is that if we expect nothing of a child;  if he has nothing to accomplish he will never have any confidence in himself. If a child doesn’t hear how loved he is, what a great job he has done he will also not have any self-esteem. Giving a child tasks around the house help build confidence. He can set the table or help make scramble eggs for example. Praise him for his efforts. in time he will start having confidence in himself.

Children’s personalities differ tremendously. Some children are very dependent on acceptance by others and will often feel they cannot fit in with their peers unless the create a better image of themselves. These children often start creating lies about themselves and their lives. They begin to spin a web of lies which they themselves  find hard to keep up with
