Emotional growth of 10 year olds

Ten year olds are generally respectful and affectionate towards parents though their friends and the accompying peer pressure weighs heavily. At the same time they start to see parents as fallible human beings who can make mistakes. They still enjoy spending time with their family members and going with on outings and holidays. They tend to have quarrels with younger siblings but get on well with older ones. Because they are very self-conscious they tend to be very sensitive to criticism, exclusion and being teased.

They want to hear authority figures say they have done well. Therefor they enjoy helping with chores – if the pay off is a “Well done.” Ten is the awkward age between dependent child and independent preteen.swem kenton 2010 383

Generally they are happy, even silly creatures. Girls tend to have a hard time with friends. Jealousy, cliques and fall-outs are at the order of the day. Boys do not focus so much on who they play with but rather on mutual interests. At this age being accepted by peers is very important for the next level of emotional development. Their seems to be a correlation between that acceptance and behavioral and emotional issues during adolescence. When exposed to a traumatic event a ten year old may feel that he is “different” from his peers – a very unpopular feeling at this age.

Ten year olds begin to develop a conscience and understand other people’s emotions and body-language. They have a good idea of what is right or wrong. They are still under the impression that their own beliefs are correct and are shared by the whole world.

When struggling with trauma 7 to 12 year olds all display the same possible behavioral fall-outs.
