How do I wean my child off sodas?

Education is the first step towards change. Most children do not know the facts about sodas and the effect it has on theirbodies. Explaining to them – quite graphically if need be – what it does to their teeth, bones and insulin levels may just let a light go on for them. Explain diabetes to them. Injections, finger pricks and not eating sweet things. Show them photos of people with problem teeth. Explain to them how all the sugar in the soda kills his body’s soldiers (white blood cells) and then they cannot fight germs. Hopefully they will grasp the severity if it and half the battle will be won.

Secondly:  Do not stock sodas at home. If parents do not provide it they cannot be tempted. Very few children will choose water if there is soda beaming from the fridge.

Thirdly: Limit their intake to special occasions once a week at the most. Children’s parties often have sodas on offer. Keeping them away from that may put the host or hostess in a awkward position. It may be wise to get into the a habit of taking a water bottle along to social occasions. This way it is easy to quietly drink his water without a big fuss.

Decaffeinated iced-teas or a small glass of 100% fruit juice are better options for children but must still be limited to once a day.
