Intestinal Artresia and Stenoses

Intestinal Artresia  occurs when a part or parts of the intestines of a child does not develop. The condition is normally diagnosed before birth when a routine sonogram (sonar) is done. There are many different types of Artresia, depending on which part of the intestinal tract the problem occurs.

Intestinal Stenoses Refers to the narrowing of a part of the intestines. The symptoms of Artresia and Stenoses are as follows:

  • feedings are not tolerated
  • greenish-yellow vomit
  • colic-like abdominal pain that comes and goes.
  • swollen stomach (Not in all cases)

In children all forms of Intestinal Artresia and Stenoses are treated surgically by doing a laparotomy – a incision in the abdomen. If the affected area is small the damaged part of the intestines will be removed and joined to the next part of the intestines. If the intestines are still too short to join, a stoma is inserted until the intestines have grown longer and can be joined again.

A stoma is a little opening (mouth) that connects the open part of the intestines with the outside of the body where it connects with a special plastic bag.  All the fluids from the intestines drain into this bag.

Children who suffered from Artresia or Strenoses have to go for regular check-ups to ensure their growth and development is on par. Due to a shortened intestinal tract after the operation it is possible for them to develop nutritional deficiencies.
