Lesser-known Allergy Symptoms in Children

Most parents are familiar with the well-known symptoms of allergies such as hay fever, itchy eyes and eczema. Yet, there are more, lesser-known symptoms that one would not necessarily associate with a food allergy. Some of the behavior children portray are down-right irritating and they are often scolded for that – with little effect. The following symptoms may be linked to an allergy to foods such as dairy, wheat, gluten, sugar and eggs.

  • “Allergic salute” is the term used to describe a child who constantly wipes his nose upwards or with the back of his arm. A child could even have a horizontal crease near the end of his nose due to the constant pushing up Allergic-Salute-779677action.
  • Constant snorting noises as if he is clearing something from the back of his throat. A post-nasal drip is often the culprit and is just as irritating to the child as it is to the parent.
  • Puffy face, especially under the eyes. Dark circles under the eyes are referred to as “Allergic shiners”
  • Horizontal wrinkles that run from the inner corner of the eye.
  • Lips that are cracked at the corners or frequently dry and scaly.
  • Dry and scaly cheeks.
  • Bottom of the ear lobes can be red  and cracked.
  • Eyes that are constantly wet and lashes that stick together.
  • Pot belly.
  • Musty smell.
  • Sleeping behavior such as a child who constantly moves his legs while asleep or rhythmically bangs his head.
  • A child who is uncontrollable, clumsy, disobedient or hyperactive could just as well be suffering from a food allergy.
  • Other behavioral symptoms could be sudden fatigue, abnormal sleepiness or “busyness,” mood changes, depression, anxiety, fear, crying fits and bad temper.
  • Headaches.
  • Frequent ear, throat en sinus infection.
  • Muscle weakness or stiffness.
  • Sudden itchiness.
  • Breathlessness.
  • Sweating.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Marked changes is drawing or handwriting after a lunch-break while the child was well-behaved before.
  • Bed wetting.
  • Constipation.

Researchers are starting to suspect a possible link between allergies to foods like dairy, wheat and gluten and a variety of clinical disorders such as Migraines, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Schizophrenia and Depression.

There has been cases where addressing the allergy in the child – thus a allergy-free diet – has had a wonderful, positive effect on a child who suffers from any or some of the symptoms mentioned above. An allergic response has its origins in the immune system. Therefore it may be wise to boost a child’s immune system while avoiding allergens in his diet. Products like “Oleo Ex” ( Olive leaf extract ) and Echinae can help to strengthen the immune system and thus lessen the body’s overreaction to allergens.
