Be sure your child is ready and keen to start potty training. By this time he or she has probably seen you or other kids go the toilet. Children learn by modeling. To enhance the modeling-effect one can make use of dolls that “wee” after given water. Let them play with the doll, putting it on the potty and watch it wee. One can even start a star chart for the doll. This is not essential. Just a nice to have.
There are wonderful books and dvd’s on the market today to help familiarize a child with the potty training process. Try and asses whether your child will prefer using a potty or the toilet. Get a packet of pull up’s (training pants) to try out. Before investing a lot of money in pull up’s and underwear be sure that your child approve of them.
Let your child “bond” with their potty by watching TV on it – fully clothed. When he indicates that he’s ready let him sit on the potty or toilet for a few minutes at a time. Do not insist or force him.
Take her in the morning as soon as she wakes and then hourly or two hourly – depending on how much she drank. Make a big fuss about her pull up’s and how she is a big girl now. Time spent on the potty should be fun. She can read books , color in or let the doll take a turn on the potty. Never force a child to go potty. It will become a power-struggle which you will inevitably lose.
Encourage every effort made even if it wasn’t successful. Star charts motivate most children. If they insist on not
putting the sticker on their chart but rather on their potty/ hand/ bed let them. They love parading around showing off their stars and stickers.
If you feel yourself becoming impatient, back off for a while.
Empty diapers with pooh into the toilet or potty and tell him gently that this is where it belongs. Do not expect your child to get the pooing part of potty training done overnight.
If a child has a accident, let her help with the cleaning up. Not as a form of punishment but together as a team. Let her wash out her underwear in water and put it in the washing machine. She can help mop up or clean the carpet.
Some children can become resistant to potty training. For more information on that please view the article on being resistant.
