Potty training: Pride vs Pace

Without realizing it we often let our pride as parents dictate when potty training should commence.  Being subdued to tales of parents whose (15 month old) toddler was completely (and miraculously) potty-trained within 24 hours does not help our sense of failure. And thus unrealistic expectations are born.

What is a realistic age for a child to be potty trained? Twenty five percent of children only potty train after 3 and a half years of age. Normally, two seems to be a good time to start IF your child is ready. Children all develop at a different pace and two is not a magical number. Yes, there are 18 month old children who clearly indicate that they are ready but the golden rule is to let your child set the pace. Research seems to find that two year olds can take between 6 to 9 months to be potty trained. Three year olds can take between 3 to 4 weeks.

One way to set yourself up for failure is to put pressure on a child who is not ready, willing or keen to go off diapers. There are ways to speed up a child’s readiness, but in the end he or she is in control here. (For information on “readiness,” click on the following link)
