Potty Training Readiness

Trying to potty train a child before he or she is ready is honestly a futile task. It will end up being a frustrating, tearful event which you as a parents cannot win. The long and short of it is that with potty training the child is the one in charge.

Between the ages of 2 and 3 years of age a child will show signs that he may be ready and keen to start using the potty or toilet. This is a rough estimate – as some children may be ready at 15 months (the exception!) and others only at around 3 and a half years of age.

Look out for the following signs and behavior in your child.

  • Being dry for at least 2 hours at a time.
  • Being dry when he wakes up in the morning.
  • A child is able to follow instructions and cooperate.
  • A child is able to dress and undress himself.
  • A child becomes uncomfortable with dirty diapers and wants to be changed. He may either tell you he’s made a poo or take the diaper off himself.
  • Wanting to wear underwear like a brother/cousin or friends.
  • He or she recognizes the sensation of a full bladder.
  • Regular bowel movements.
  • He or she asks to use the potty.
  • You can tell by his facial expression that something’s happening in the diaper.
