Preschoolers with depression

Depression is a persistent sadness that interferes with normal social activities such as  school work and friendships. Recent studies by different Universities found that preschoolers are indeed at risk of developing depression. The Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis has developed ways to help identify whether a child may be suffering from depression.

Preschoolers are not yet able to verbalize feelings but when they get to watch puppets who portray different emotions such as sadness or joy, they are able to identify with one or the other. Parent’s play a major role to help make sad-little-boysuch a diagnoses as they are often aware that something is amiss with their child and that it is not just a passing phase.

Children do not portray the same symptoms as adults do when depressed. Symptoms in children may vary from time to time and between different settings. Personalities and characteristics of children also complicate diagnoses. The quiet, shy type will probably go unnoticed while a child who is unusually aggressive might get professional help much quicker. It is also very difficult to tell the difference between depression and normal emotional development.

When the suspicion of depression crosses a parent’s mind it is crucial to get professional help to confirm or deny the possibility. When left untreated, it will have a negative effect on a child’s social and emotional development.
