SLIT as treatment for allergies

Sublingual immunotherapy – also known as allergy drops or SLIT – is the treatment of allergies by taking allergen serum in drop or tablet form under the tongue. It works on the same principal as allergy shots (SCIT) but because it is not injected it is less traumatic, especially for children. With the recent advancement in the area of allergy drops it will most probably become the preferred method of treating environmental and food allergies in children.

SLIT can be used by pregnant woman and children as young as 18 months. This type of treatment have a lot of benefits when compared to allergy shots (SCIT.) It is less expensive and less traumatic to children. Ask any parent who has to puthateshots a child through injection after injection – each and every one would rather opt for drops. SLIT drops can be taken at home and thus there is no need for hour-long visits to Doctor’s rooms. School programs and holidays can continue uninterrupted.

Research results show there is no guarantee that each and every child will be completely allergy-free after treatment. Yet, those whose allergies are not completely resolved reports less severe symptoms after successfully completing SLIT. Patients have reported positive result within a few weeks after treatment and a child could be completely allergy-free within 3 years.

allergy_dropsTo date there has never been any reports of anaphylactic shock from patients on SLIT. Side-effects range from itchy eyes and mouths, diarrhea and nausea and mild asthma. These symptoms are normally mild and are treated at home.

Speak to an allergist about SLIT as a possible treatment for allergies. Products and knowledge about allergy drops may vary from country to country. In Europe SLIT has been used for a number of years while in the USA it has only been recently FDA approved with products like “Allerdrops” coming on the market.
