Symptoms of depression in pre-schoolers

It is normal for a pre-schooler to have a temper tantrum but this normally blows over quickly and he is able to find joy in some or other activity again. One of the crucial indicators of possible depression in small children is the absence of joy while playing.

Other symptoms could be the following:

  • Frequent tearfulness, sadness or crying.Preschooler_sad
  • Feelings of hopelessness.
  • A child does not find joy in activities that he/she used to enjoy.
  • Persistent fatigue, low energy or boredom.
  • Social withdrawal and refusal to interact with peers or family members.
  • Irritability, hostility or anger.
  • Episodes of aggression such as biting,  kicking or verbal outbursts.
  • Changes in appetite. Lack of appetite or compulsive eating.
  • Changes in sleeping patterns. Either struggling to sleep or sleeping too much. Nightmares and night terrors could also occur.
  • Extreme feelings of guilt over trivial things such as breaking a glass.
  • Impaired thinking or concentration.
  • Poor performance in kindergarten.
  • Talking about dying or playing morbid, destructive games (see traumatic play.) Children tend to give vent to feelings through play.
  • Physical complaints of headaches and stomach aches that do not respond to treatment.
