Fecal impaction is a hard, large stool that cannot come out of the body. It forms a blockage in the bowels that has the potential to become a complete obstruction requiring
surgery.
Fecal impaction follows after a period of constipation. During constipation, stools move through the bowels very slowly. The longer stools stay in the bowels the drier and harder they become – leading to impaction.
The symptoms of fecal impaction in children tend to be
- constipation ( not passing stools / straining to pass stools / passing small, hard stools)
- abdominal pain and cramps
- soiled pants (watery stools is pressed past the impaction)
- bleeding when passing stools
- sudden watery stools after having constipation
- anxiety.
