Symptoms of Fecal Impaction in children

Fecal impaction is a hard, large stool that cannot come out of the body. It forms a blockage in the bowels that has the potential to become a complete obstruction requiring surgery.

Fecal impaction follows after a period of constipation. During constipation, stools move through the bowels very slowly. The longer stools stay in the bowels the drier and harder they become – leading to impaction.

The symptoms of fecal impaction in children tend to be

  • constipation ( not passing stools / straining to pass stools / passing small, hard stools)
  • abdominal pain and cramps
  • soiled pants (watery stools is pressed past the impaction)
  • bleeding when passing stools
  • sudden watery stools after having constipation
  • anxiety.
