Teaching Young Children about Honesty

I came across something - which in my opinion – is an excellent way to get the concept of honesty instilled in a young child : a mom explained to her young son that there are fine, invisible threads between their hearts. Every time he lies to her one of those threads get cut until there are none left and their hearts aren’t  connected anymore. Then they will both feel very sad and far from one another. Every time he tells the truth those threads become mended again. Her son immediately admitted to lying and wanted to mend the cord again by telling the truth this time

Young children have a great need to feel connected to their parents. Teaching them what lies does to their relationship will lay a very good foundation for teaching honesty.

Of course, highlighting the whole connected-to-mom thing to a teenager will have the opposite effects. Teenagers need and want to cut the cord with their parents. This is a normal part of growing up. An explanation like this might just turn them into pathological liars.
