The Benefits of Sunlight

Research from different corners of the world suggests that sunlight is essential to the well-being of adults and children alike.

The production of Serotonin in the brain is very much dependent on the amount of sunlight our bodies are exposed to. Serotonin is the feel-good hormone that has a influence on our mood, appetite, hormonal balance and sleep-wake cycles.

The Melatonin levels in our bodies are also influenced by the amount of sunlight we are exposed to. Melatonin is the body’s clock and plays a role in sleep patterns.

Vitamin D is a essential part of a healthy body. Ninety percent of our Vit D comes from the sun. In fact, Vitamin D is not really a vitamin but more hormone. It helps build strong bones and teeth, regulates the immune system and helps fight heart disease and cancers. Every organ in the body have Vit D receptors. When the body is Vit D deficient, the body starts to struggle in all sorts of ways. Thirty minutes of sun exposure produces the same amount of Vit D found in 200 glasses of milk.

Other sources of Vit D are oily fish such as tuna, salmon and mackerel. Fish liver oil, beef liver and egg yolks also contain small amounts of Vit D. Milk are normally fortified with Vit D as well as some cereals, juice and yogurts. One has to eat and drink quite a lot to reap the same benefit sunlight has to offer.
