The child’s developing immune system

baby-chewing-kitten-tailThe immune system is a extremely complex structure that aims to protect against antigens or disease-causing organisms like bacterias or viruses. Different tissues and organs like lymph nodes, bone marrow, thymus and spleen are involved. Leukocytes (white blood cells) are stored in these different organs and tissues and travel through the body via the blood and lymphatic system.

During pregnancy a mother carries antibodies (a type of specialized Leukocyte) over to her baby. This process, called passive immunity, gives the child some protection against infections.   From the age of 4 to 6 months passive immunity gets depleted as the antibodies starts to disappear.  From there on the child’s body has to start producing it’s own leukocytes. This leaves a child vulnerable to every organism that he comes across.  Babies explore their new world by tasting and chewing everything, thus they come into contact with a lot more germs than adults do.  Every infection the immune system has to fight makes it stronger in the long-run. The next time the same pathogen comes around the immune system recognizes it and takes care of it.

By the age of two a child’s immune system could be well on it’s way with a good supply of antibodies. This sounds like a straight-forward case of  “give it some time and all will be well.” However, there are a lot of factors that can have a negative influence on a child’s immune system. The environment that most children live in expose them to all sorts of toxins through the air that they breath or the food they ingest.  The causes of a weakened immune system can be endless and even vary from child to child.
