Tonsillectomy Diet

After a tonsillectomy it is more important for a child to drink fluids than to eat. A dehydrated child will not eat and feel dreadful. Using a straw will ensure a child takes small sips at a time.

Let your child chew a lot of gum. That keeps the saliva going which forces a child to swallow. This will speed up recovery. Chewing gum also help relief spasms in the jaw which lead to ear ache.

Water and soft juice such as apple and pear juice is is ideal. Electrolytes can be mixed with juice to make it taste better. Avoid citrus juice such as orange and lemon. Tomato juice is also not a good choice. Overall, red fluids should be avoided as it may be confused for bleeding. A child should have roughly 1 cup of fluid for every hour that he is awake.

Avoid very spicy or warm food.

Day 1. Give water, ice, frozen fruit juice and slushees to drink. Avoid warm beverages till later.

Day 2. Milk, jelly, custard, warm tea, beef and chicken broth.

Day 3 and 4.  Soft food such as macaroni, mashed potato, eggs, pancakes, soup.

Day 5. A normal diet should be possible by now. Hot dogs normally goes down well. It is best to avoid toast, potato chips, pretzels and crisp bacon for at least one week.
