A tonsillectomy will be scheduled for a specific day. Your child will not be allowed to eat and drink anything from around midnight the night before the surgery. The general rule for children is to be NPO ( nil per os/nothing per mouth) for
around 8 hours before a tonsillectomy. Surgeons may differ on the length of time that a child should fast.
It is very important to be diligent in making sure your child does not secretly take a sip or snack during the night. Going under general anesthesia with food in his stomach can cause a child to vomit during surgery. That “vomit” could end up in the lungs.
As a youngster I was kept off food and drinks before I went for my tonsillectomy. As soon as the adults turned their backs I helped myself to water that was on my neighbor’s bedside table. Being 5 years old, I didn’t tell a soul. The after-effect of that glass of water is embedded in my memory till today.
It may be wise to let your child sleep with you in the room the night before to ensure he doesn’t eat or drink anything. Help your child to brush his or her teeth without swallowing water afterwards. Practice this for a week before the tonsillectomy, just to be sure.
If a child does take in fluid or food before surgery try and estimate how much he drank. For example 1 teaspoon or half a cup and let the surgeon know as soon as possible. The tonsillectomy may have to be rescheduled or postponed.
