Tonsillectomy: What your surgeon should know

The following issues should be brought under the surgeon’s attention before a tonsillectomy is done.

  • A cold, flue or other infection that develops before the tonsillectomy.
  • If your child has had something to eat or drink during the 8 hours before the tonsillectomy is due.
  • A loose tooth.
  • Bleeding tendencies in the family.
  • Whether your child has had Aspirin ( a type of pain medication). As a general rule children should not be given aspirin; more so before going for surgery. Aspirin thins the blood and can cause excessive bleeding.
  • If a family member has had a negative reaction to anesthesia
  • If the child is behind with his or her immunizations.
