Tonsillectomy – when should it be done

Often when a child starts to struggle with recurrent Tonsillitis, parents begin to wonder whether a tonsillectomy might be the answer. It could very well be under the following circumstances.

  • If a child suffers from tonsillitis twice a month or 5 times per year. Keep in mind that a child does not necessarily have tonsillitis every time he has a sore throat. A post-nasal drip could also cause a sore throat.
  • If tonsils interfere with a child’s speech, swallowing,  breathing or sleep. In cases of sleep-apnea (when a child stops breathing while asleep) it may become a quite urgent to have tonsils removed.
  • Tonsillitis that does not respond to treatment. Especially where complications such as abscesses occur.
  • If a child has tonsil stones – also called Tonsilloliths – in or behind the tonsils. These stones develop in craters inside the tonsil and causes chronic tonsillitis which is very difficult to treat.
  • Severe, recurrent ear infections may benefit from a a T and A (Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy.) Swollen adenoids can prevent the middle ear from draining, leading to infections.
