Just like with adults, children tend to be less fearful when they know what to expect during a tonsillectomy.
Explain to the child why a tonsillectomy has to be done. For example: Their are germs living in his tonsils and the doctor has to take out the tonsils to get rid of the germs. The germs gives him the sore throat and fever. His body is grown up now and does not need the tonsils any more. Just like he does not need nappies/baby bottle/ soother anymore.
He will not be allowed to have anything to eat or drink from when he goes to bed the night before until his tonsils are out. Not even a sip of water. Else he will vomit a lot in hospital.
He will go to hospital where the doctors and nurses really love kids. Buy him a new soft-toy that will be his hospital buddy. If he has a favorite toy or blanket, take that along.
Be sure to explain to the child that the tonsillectomy will be done through his mouth, like when the dentist looks at his teeth and that they will not cut his throat open. He will wear special hospital clothes.
Find out from the surgeon whether the anesthesia will be given via a gas mask or IV drip. It is very important to prepare the child for either in advance. The mask can be a special-powers mask…kids normally like that. Needles are something else though. In most cases a topical, anesthetic cream can be put on the skin where the drip will go up to “deaden” it to some of the pain.
He will be fast asleep and will not feel anything while they quickly take out the tonsils with the nasty germs in. He will not remember anything from the operation.
During a tonsillectomy a child’s biggest fear is being separated from his parents. Promise him that you will be there with him as soon as he opens his eyes..cross your heart. When he wakes up his throat may be very sore, so he does not have to speak and must try not to cry. That will make his throat hurt even more. He might feel a bit dizzy and funny when he wakes up but he will soon feel better.
The nice thing about having your tonsils removed is that you get to eat a lot of ice cream, slushees, jelly and bubble gum afterwards. You could even go to the shops together and choose his favorites before he goes to hospital.
He will go home before it is dark – when the nurses are sure he is all right. (Normally children older than 3 do not have to spend the night in hospital but those younger than 3 do.)
It may be useful to play-act the whole process on a stuffed toy.
