After a tonsillectomy a child should remain quiet for at least 5 days after coming out of hospital. It is wise to refrain from any vigorous exercise for 12 to 14 days afterwards. This does not mean a child is in isolation. Friends are welcome to drop in for a visit. He should be able to attend school again after about 1 week.
After a tonsillectomy a child’s throat will be sore and look bad. A whitish, scab-like membrane will form where the tonsils used to be. The child’s breath may have a foul smell. Between day 5 to 9 the white membrane comes off. This
may cause some bleeding that should subside within 15 minutes. For the next 24 to 48 hours the throat will probably be very sore and a child may complain of ear ache. The ear ache is referred pain from the throat and may last up to 10 days after the tonsillectomy was done.
It is normal for a child to have a temperature of around 101F/38C. A temperature of 102F/39C is considered abnormal and it will be wise to inform the surgeon.
Pain is part of recovering from a tonsillectomy. Normally on leaving hospital a child will receive pain killers such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Do not give medication that contains Codeine to your child. Pain medication should be given every 4 to 6 hours; even if the child does not complain of pain. After giving pain medication wait at least 20 minutes before giving the child fluid or food. A ice-collar around the throat also helps to relief pain. Dry air can cause a throat to become very sore. Putting a humidifier in the room will bring relief. Be sure to follow cleaning instructions to prevent the growth of bacteria.
Pain can also be controlled by chewing gum. This helps relief spasms in the jaw that causes a lot of the pain.
It is very important that a child takes fluids. Roughly 1 cup of fluid (water and/or electrolytes) for every hour a child is awake. With a tonsillectomy the motto is: the more you eat the sooner you heal.
