Tonsillitis:when to see a doctor

If tonsillitis is accompanied by symptoms of a cold such as runny nose, coughing and sneezing it is normally caused by a virus. The soar throat should clear by itself within 2 weeks.

If a child has tonsillitis with the following symptoms it is essential to get medical advice and most likely treatment.

  • High fever of 102F/39C
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Yellow spots on throat
  • Severe throat pain which means fluid intake is limited. This can lead to dehydration
  • Dehydration symptoms such as dry mouth, urinating less, dark colored urine, dry skin
