Tonsils and Adenoids

tonsil (1)Tonsils are two, small balls of lymphatic tissue on each side of the throat. They are normally the size of almonds and can be seen at the back of the throat.  Tonsils help prevent the spread of  viruses and bacteria further down the throat. It is believed that this function only plays a role in the first year of a child’s life. After 1 year of age a child’s body finds other ways to fight disease.

Adenoids are two lumpy clusters of spongy tissue high up in the throat, behind the nose. They are not visible without using a special mirror. Like tonsils, adenoids also play a role in protecting theadenoids body against viruses and bacteria. Adenoids have a added function in that it produces antibodies to help fight infection. It is believed that adenoids only play a role until a child is 3 years old. From the age of 5 adenoids start to shrink and by the time a child is a teenager they are hardly visible at all.
