Trauma or stress?

Trauma is  a form of stress but not all stress becomes trauma. Stress occurs when a situation temporarily or briefly throws the nervous system off balance. After a relative short period of time the nervous system returns to it’s normal, balanceddepression state – due to it’s ability to cope  or because the stressful situation seized.

A situation becomes traumatic when the nervous system is overwhelmed and incapable of coping with what happened. The nervous system is thrown off balance. If the imbalance is not resolved the effect on the nervous system will linger long after the traumatic event seized. The nervous system is caught in a state of permanent over-drive. This can lead to states of fearfulness, sleep disturbances, panic attacks, post traumatic stress disorder and depression.

There is no age-restriction on trauma. Young and old alike can fall victim to it.
