Why children need to drink WATER.

For a child’s brain and bowels to work optimally it needs WATER. The brain is made up of 90% water and cannot function properly unless well hydrated. Without water the energy levels of the brain goes down. It becomes impossible to concentrate. A child will become tired,  ”floppy,” dizzy and cranky. All sort of aches and pains develop such as headaches and joint aches.

Without sufficient water intake a child will become constipated. Stools will become harder and bigger and very difficult to pass. Automatically one tends to suspect that the constipation is due to lack of fiber in the diet. More fiber with little fluid intake only aggravates the constipation.

Fruit juice and sodas cannot replace water. Fruit juice contains sugars – fruit sugars and others – and actually increases the body’s need for water. Sodas carry a long list of health hazards and like fruit juice actually increases the body’s need for water. The same goes for coffee and most teas.

One to three year olds need about 1,3 liters (about 5 cups) of water per day. Older children obviously need more, especially if they are very active and depending on the weather conditions.

Drinking a lot of water with a meal is not a good option because water dilutes the digestive juices and the nutrients in the food. Rather let a child wait at least 20 minutes after having his food before drinking a full glass of water.
