Why children stress. Part 2
  1. Peer pressure. As parents of small children we often make use of peer pressure. “Look, Johny, Peter is eating his broccoli. Won’t you try some?.”  As our kids grow up we swing to the other side. “If your friends jump in the fire will you do the same?” The truth is that peer pressure can put a child under severe stress. Wanting to fit in and belong to a group is one of the basic human needs. The prospect of being ridiculed or excluded from a group for not conforming to them, will be extremely upsetting to a child.
  2. Stressful home environmentDivorce can devastate a child. Even children whose parents are together may have a nagging fear that their parents may get divorced  after a argument. If the household is disorganized to the extend that everyone is always looking for something or schoolwork gets handed in late, a child will experience anxiety and stress. Sibling  rivalry bullying. When parents compare children with each other a child can get the impression that he doesn’t measure up to. A study at the University of Rochester concluded that the more stress a parent experience, the more physical illnesses the children have. Children are extremely sensitive to their parent’s stress and also learn from parents how to behave under pressure.  If a parent overreacts or panic can sometimes cross the line and become when there is lightning, for example, a child will get the message that the situation warrants fear.
  3. A new school or starting school for the first time will create a lot of fear and uncertainty. Will my teacher be nice? Will I make friends? Will I know what to do? Will mom remember to fetch me? All sort of negative thoughts can go through a little one’s mind.
  4. Relocating to a new town or city is extremely stressful to children. Even a move that is supposed to take some pressure off a child like moving from a big city to the countryside will create uncertainty and fear. Moving house in the same town is will also bring new challenges.SiblingRivalry 3
  5. The Media can sometimes awaken fears for things that children would otherwise not come in contact with. Vampires, aliens and monsters can make the night seem extra dark. Children with much older siblings can accidentally be exposed to media images that they are not mature enough to handle.
  6. Post-traumatic stress is a condition of extreme and chronic stress after a traumatic incident like a car crash, hijacking, molestation or loss of a close family member. A child will not most probably not be able to handle such trauma without the help of a Specialist like a child Psychologist.
